Where to find Investing Opportunities you can Trust?

Aug 11, 2023

A story about a client who took dangerous investing advice from the internet

My client Seema (for confidentiality I’ll refrain from using her real name), before becoming my client, lost a lot of money from taking bad investing advice from youtube. Seema was devastated when she came to me. She lost over 50% of the money she invested blindly.

When clients come to me, my advice is simple but effective: always invest in Index funds that Warren Buffet (the titan of investing!) also invests in. Why? Because you’re then following someone who KNOWS what they’re doing and isn’t giving you investment advice that just benefits themselves.

Spoiler alert: there is no “get rich quick” scheme when it comes to investing!

I understand that it’s very tempting to listen to other’s advice on the internet but unless you’re hiring a financial professional who KNOWS what they’re doing, can look at your financial situation and understand your financial goals and therefore present you with a sound financial plan, DON’T take any advice from people on the internet.

With Seema we ended up investing a lot of her money in Index Funds and she’s now managed to recoup most of what she previously lost by us working together.

Where to find Investment opportunities that you can trust

It’s important to note that all financial advisors are not fiduciary. (which means that they’re entrusted with the authority to act on behalf of another person or entity and has the LEGAL and ethical obligation to act in the best interest of them). When finding someone to help you with investing, look for a fiduciary, and someone who charges a one-time fee (rather than taking commissions from investing in specific stocks that benefit them).

Also make sure you have a contract in place and they’re not a partner or beneficiary of a financial investment firm.

All opportunities are not equal and you need to be mindful of your risk tolerance. Ask yourself the following questions as this will determine your risk tolerance (something that I always go through with my clients):

Do you have an emergency fund?

How much can you spare each month?

Do you have dependents relying on you?

Do you have any recurrent expenses or an impending BIG BILL?

Depending on your risk tolerance will depend on the type of investing you should do.

Most investment opportunities are only for accredited investors, which means that unless you if make more than $250k per annum from investing, you won’t have the opportunities to invest available to you.

If you attend events with investors who are ahead of the game, you’ll start upgrading your clique and having more opportunities.

Your friends will determine your path in life, your wealth and your success. Rich people get richer because they are constantly surrounded by opportunities unavailable to everyone else. They’re also surrounded by people who think BIGGER.

So how do you find these groups?

Cultivate the right relationships!
