Passionate People = Impatient People
Mar 15, 2024As-Salaam-Alaikum everyone! Welcome back to Muslim Women Invest.
Passion is often regarded as a good thing…but there’s one part we often forget to consider:
Passionate people are also impatient people.
There is such a thing as too much passion. To demonstrate this point, I want you to imagine a situation in which you are so frustrated with someone—maybe your child, a sibling, a friend, or otherwise—because you have given them advice over and over and over again, advice that would be extremely beneficial to them, but it keeps falling on deaf ears.
How many of you have experienced this kind of frustration? I certainly have—even thinking about it is riling me up.
But have you considered that this isn’t the best way to teach someone?
The Dangers of Too Much Passion
As I’m sure you can tell, I am extremely passionate about investing. In fact, at the beginning, I would tell anyone around me why they should invest…and shame them if they didn’t.
At the beginning, I didn’t understand all the resistance people—especially women—had toward investing. So I used to go on and on and on about how investing was so great, and I used to reprimand people by telling them all the things they should have invested in.
I meant well. However, this expression of passion and enthusiasm pushed a lot of people away from me. I had too much passion; it blinded me to all the ways I was actually killing people’s interest in investing.
People were often turned off by my extreme enthusiasm, because I made everything about investing and how great it would be for them, not taking into consideration their personal experience or their background. I had too much passion and not enough patience.
The Better Way
The problem with my method was that I was so passionate—and I got so irritated by people not understanding what they're missing out on—that my energy was pushing people away.
What I learned from attempting to teach people with too much passion was that I am impatient. I want to have somebody immediately act upon the advice that I know is best for them, even without knowing their personal circumstances and all the reasons they might not be eager to jump on it.
Now that I am a more seasoned investor, my approach has changed.
There’s a prophetic quality called being a Raouf, which means you listen to understand the other person's wants and needs instead of spoon-feeding them or trying to convince them of something.
If you find you struggle with patience this way, or find that you have too much passion to truly pause and listen to people, the first thing I want you to do is stop trying to convince anybody.
Your job is not to convince anyone. Your job is to sow a seed and patiently wait for it to take root.
If you plant a seed, you do not immediately expect it to sprout and start producing flowers the instant you put it in the ground.
Instead, you sow seeds and wait patiently and create an environment for that seed to hopefully take root.
This is how you sow the seeds of knowledge anywhere that you go. And hopefully, some of them will take root.
Keep sowing the seeds. Keep nurturing people. Keep serving them. And ultimately understand that the best form of service is to listen.
We are here to serve, we are here to uplift, and we are here to listen.
