Examining the lack of financial literacy in Muslim Women residing in the United States

Muslim Women Invest

Asalam Alaikum,

My name is Dr Khalil and if you are reading this I welcome you into my world. I am a medical doctor by degree and a rarity in the Muslim World, because I am a finance nerd and a veteran investor.

Having been a Muslim Woman all of my 35 years gives me the unique perspective to speak about the lack of financial literacy in Muslim Women. There has been no formal study done in the past decade (a quick google search will affirm this claim) to ascertain the level of financial literacy in Muslim Women residing in the United States.

This is not only alarming but points to a class of society that has been forgotten in the finance world. I must add that Muslim Women in general in my experience face unique barriers that dissuades them from taking any interest in their financial matters. An obvious one is active discouragement from their childhood to partake in any big decisions of their own life.

The US school system is equally responsible for not imparting any financial literacy of substance to the children under it's care.

I can list 101 barriers to women's lack of financial literacy. But instead I want to speak about moving towards solutions.

I present you a case study of my own life and how personal responsibility and " reading diverse books" is one of many factors that played into my own journey to financial literacy.

Without going into much detail the number one issue to tackle any problem is to first identify it. Most women do not identify having no financial literacy as an issue. Most of us are guilty of instant gratification and have no emergency fund.

Unfortunately living an undisciplined life comes with consequences. I did not start organizing my finances and strategizing my investments until a-lot later in life. My husband's ICU admission in 2018 and me having to take an Uber to deliver my third child alone in a hospital opened my eyes to the other side of life. I was bracing myself to bringing up my children alone , with no finances in order and no work experience or a job. Having no family around and family abroad with no resources to support are some jarring thoughts that bring everything into perspective.

I hope that no woman has to be jolted by an unpleasant experience to a rude awakening that they have nothing to fall back on. I am thus on a mission to educate and encourage women to make their financial literacy a priority.

I have professionally consulted with Muslim families for years as a side hustle. It is remarkable may people have been fed the lies that they need professional degrees, outside help and expensive financial advise to get their finances in order. These myths are so rampant that it takes me weeks if not months convincing families that investing is not a get rich quick scheme and neither will they loose all of their money.

Infact the right investment will help you:
1. Cover your children's education

2. Allow you to retire early

3. Create generational wealth

4. Recession proof your savings

5. Help you cover an emergency or an expensive event

So today take a single step in your journey to financial freedom. I have free weekly classes that are 30 minutes long and do not need to be taken in any particular order. Allow me the honor to hold your hand and take you into a new reality where money brings opportunity for you and your family.

Join me every week for my 20 minute live class, Sunday evenings 9pm EST, where I share what's currently going on in the financial world.
